CENTRAL CITY - Thorwald C. Christensen, 98, of Central City died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. David W. Zellmer will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery at Dannebrog. The Rev. Robert Carlson Jr. will officiate.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Immediate survivors include his wife, Mildred; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Sharon Christensen of Osceola; and a daughter and son-in-law, Donna Jean and Alvin Andersen of Grand Island.
Other survivors include five grandchildren, Debra and husband Mike Coleman, Brenda and husband Duane Boeke, Tiffany and husband Galen Meysenburg, Cindy Christensen, and Randall and wife Janel Andersen, six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Thorwald received his education at Howard County rural School District 28 and grew up on the family farm. In his youth, he worked as a carpenter and later farmed near Dannebrog.
On June 8, 1932, he was united in marriage to Mildred Jessen at Dannebrog. The couple made their home and farmed near Dannebrog for 40 years. In 1972 , they retired and moved to Grand Island. For the last three years the couple has resided at the Central City Care Center. On June 8, 2002, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
He enjoyed woodworking.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, Jens, Chris, Ted, Otto, Elmer, Pete and Carl Christensen; and five sisters, Christine Sorensen, Mary Petersen, Anna Petersen, Petrea Claussen and Elenor Petersen.
Memorials are suggested to the Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island.
