Cay Henry Ewoldt was born in Lendfeldt(sic - should be Bendfeld), Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on August 14, 1831, and lived to be over 83 years of age. He was the son of Paul and Cecilia Ewoldt. In the year 1852, he became a subject of "Uncle Sam" and from that time until 1857, he resided in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota, spending two years in Davenport (Iowa) in the first state and some years in the next and the last. He joined the party of Germans in Davenport in 1857 who immigrated to Nebraska and formed the first white settlers in Hall County...
Mr. Ewoldt was married on September 1, 1862, to Miss Eliza Steben, a native of Germany. She came to America in 1858 and after spending four years in Lafayette, Ind., emigrated to Nebraska. To this union eleven children were born of whom seven are still living and still reside in Hall county. Three passed away in infancy and Mrs. Henry Wiese, a daughter, died on May 12, 1901. Mrs. Ewoldt departed from this earth August 29, 1905. The children living are Bernhardt, Henry, Julius, Herman, Mrs. Charles Stoltenberg, of Cairo; Mrs. August Becker, and Mrs. August Schimmer. There are 38 grand children in the family...
